On the 28th of September 2023, NATO and the Equilibrium Institute held their second joint security policy roundtable discussion entitled “NATO after the Vilnius Summit: assessment from the Hungarian perspective“.
For the immediate security and stability of Europe and the transatlantic community, few summits have had to address more pressing issues than Vilnius. There is no question that this year’s NATO summit was truly “fateful”. But the focus of this discussion, organised by the Equilibrium Institute with the support of the NATO Public Diplomacy Division, is whether this year’s Summit was indeed successful in providing strategic responses and whether it was indeed able to set in motion new processes to strengthen common security.
The discussion with all the key Hungarian security policy makers and experts will therefore focus on two topics. On the one hand, the results of the Summit itself, and on the other hand, the consequences of the war in Ukraine and NATO’s reaction to it for the Central and Eastern European region.
The event was attended by Gábor Gion, State Secretary for Strategic Planning and Human Resources of the Ministry of Defence, Ministry of Defence; Péter Sztáray, State Secretary for Security Policy, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade; Márton Ugrósdy, Deputy State Secretary; Tamás Harangozó, Member of Parliament, Vice-Chairman of the Committee on Defence and Law Enforcement; Márton Tompos, Member of Parliament, Member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs; Lajos Kósa, Member of Parliament, Chairman of the Committee on Defence and Security and Petr Lunak, Deputy Head of the Engagement Section at NATO’s Public Diplomacy Division, and experts Attila Demkó, András Rácz, Péter Tálas, Anton Bendarzsevszkij.
The event was opened by Tamás Boros, Executive Director of the Equilibrium Institute. The roundtable discussion was moderated by Réka Szemerkényi, former Ambassador of Hungary to the United States.
